Homemade Treadle Wood Lathe

Posted By on April 29, 2011

This is my homemade Treadle Wood Lathe. No Electricity needed. I bought the Old Lathe for 25 bucks and cleaned it up. Added a frame to mount it too and a flywheel and crank shaft. Works great.

I like how your pedaling goes to the music xD

    Clever use of materials.
I like the flywheel type better than a spring pole type. Much smoother action.
I also liked having a unsecured pedal. You were able to move it to suit your stance.
    Nice job.

I want to do it with a car wheel n tire for a flywheel.

nice lathe could put up with the music but you are holding the tools at the wrong angle that is why you arnt getting shaving it looks as if you are using the gouge as a
    scraper

  9. lizzy0loves0fire says:

Love the lathe. Hate the music.

  10. drammensveien1 says:

    you just need a better motor (-;

  11. bsatom says:

The self powered lathe is neat. Those annoying electric canned beats you have as music really contradicts the presentation though. I just don’t like drum machines or canned beats, I like acoustic drum sets. Down with non musical robot tracks.

  12. stokes58 says:

what were you thinking when you decided on the music for this vid. nice lathe by the way. do you think it would work for bowl turning?

  13. hffg67 says:

Wow Dude , Thats awesome. You did a great job.

  14. Erniz2 says:

it runs on sandwiches, greath! :-0

check out roy underhills treadle lathe it has a different foot bar so you can stand any where along the bed to turn . nice retro fit by the way!

  16. sledderboi57 says:

Isn’t it obvious that the ‘carbon footprint’ of restoring this lathe would be significantly less than that of the manufacture of a new lathe? Props to didgeplayer – this lathe is very cool!! – and you’ve got me thinking about how to make my own.

  17. wombosi says:

    hey, nicely done man.
    impressive speed, it looks like.
also looks like it must take a long time to shape out that bowl.
    congrats.

Man made global warming is a hoax. Just live your life. We have had record cold for the past couple of years. The Earth has been cooling for a decade. Foot power is a lot more peaceful.

  19. atomak says:

    Woodscraping!

  20. emlerron says:

Bravo on the vegetable oil, thats pretty
cool. Your right one can only do so much!

  21. didgeplayer says:

Well hmm. Good point. My car does run on vegetable oil so reduced the carbon footprint of the transportation on my part. We can only do so much. The lathe was rusted badly and needed to be sanded and painted. I did not have any paint so I went to get some. I did look around for some used lumber and after finding nothing that suited the job I had to buy some. It happens. Thank you for you comment.

  22. emlerron says:

Good call on the electric free lathe! Just
think of the enormous amount of fossil
fuel, not to mention the carbon footprint
that went into your restoration projects supplies!
Not criticizing just making a point. Good
    luck with your lathe!

  23. Axbent says:

what kind of rpm do u get comfortably? Is torque good?

  24. deezynar says:

Very nice job. I hope you have lots of fun w/ it & make great things.

  25. didgeplayer says:

    Thanks Jenny
